Strength Training: Application and Implication of the Integrated Developmental Model of Supervision
An essential task of counselor supervisors is the commitment to continuous professional development. The supervisor is responsible for creating an environment that allows the supervisee to understand the therapeutic process and how to foster change in students (Stoltenberg et al. 1998; Nelson et al., 2000). Developmental models of supervision can provide direction in regard to the supervision process and counseling roles. This interactive virtual workshop provides a brief summary of the Integrative Developmental Model (IDM) of supervision. A case example is used to demonstrate how the IDM can assist supervisors in conceptualizing the supervisory process and aid in understanding what can seem like an overwhelming task.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Develop an understanding of the Integrated Developmental Model of Supervision (IDM)
  2. Identify the various elements that comprise the IDM Model
  3. Begin to develop a framework to assess supervisee level of development and methods to support on-going skill development

Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES) Conference 2014

Culturally Responsive Counselor Supervision

Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the SACES conference in Birmingham, Alabama

East Meeting Room M

50 Minute Content Session Presented by Veronica Motley

Abstract
Culturally competent clinical supervision is essential to counselor training. For counselors working with those living with HIV/AIDS, it can provide opportunities to explore their own attitudes about and relationship to chronic illness and understand the cultural and social context in which they exist. This interactive workshop will provide counselor supervisors guidelines for addressing the cultural implications of HIV/AIDS with counselors-in-training. A 4-stage developmental model designed to increase cultural responsiveness in supervisors will be introduced. Learning objectives include summarizing the rationale behind providing culturally-responsive supervision, increasing awareness of the importance of cultural dialogue in supervisory practice, and articulating two or more strategies that can improve cultural responsiveness in clinical supervision.”

Abstract: There is a need for a comprehensive, standardized, and engaging curriculum for new and seasoned clinical counselor supervisors. This presentation will focus on evaluation and feedback in supervision and offer best practices toward improving capacity of clinical supervisors in providing corrective feedback to counselors-in-training. Models of supervision are described and integrated in a model with interaction characteristics and strategies that supervisors can use when providing feedback. This presentation is designed to: (1) increase clinical supervision skills and knowledge among counselor supervisors; (2) increase learning, skills acquisition, and adoption of new knowledge regarding clinical supervision using visual and auditory methods and; (3)  improve the delivery of clinical supervision directly impacting the services provided to clients.
